3 funny legal cases
Liebeck v. McDonald's Restaurants - In 1992, 79-year-old
Stella Liebeck sued McDonald's after she spilled hot coffee on herself, causing
third-degree burns. The case became famous for the large amount of damages that
were awarded to Liebeck. While many people view this as a frivolous lawsuit,
the truth is that Liebeck suffered serious injuries as a result of the coffee
being served at a temperature that was too hot.
Pearson v. Chung - In 2007, a dry cleaning business called
Custom Cleaners lost a pair of pants belonging to a customer named Roy Pearson.
Pearson sued the business for $67 million, claiming that they had violated a
consumer protection law. The case was ultimately dismissed, but not before it
had gained national attention for its absurdity.
Pierson v. Post - In 1805, two men went hunting and both
claimed to have caught a fox. The case went to court and became a famous
property dispute case. The judge ruled that the person who first wounded the
fox and had continued to chase it had a greater right to it than the other man
who had simply stumbled upon the chase. The case has become famous for its
bizarre subject matter and for being a cornerstone of the legal concept of
"first possession."
